Let me start by saying Toro will give you gas...... if you ask for it. That's right Picky Nation, I found this little hot spot in a gas station. I came in with a large group on a Wednesday night. To my surprise, the staff was very happy to see us.
Let's start with the obvious. I ordered Sprite to drink. Can anyone tell me why all Mexican restaurants have the same nasty tasting soda? So you can tell I didn't enjoy the Sprite. That is really not a big deal. It always helps when the service is with a smile.
I always go to my favorite dish, the cheese enchiladas. I have had enough of these in my lifetime to know when it is good and bad. When I received this plate, my first reaction was not a good one. The enchiladas only filled up half of the plate. Let me say that these enchiladas were slightly above good. The taste was there and it was nothing out of the ordinary. So here we are so quickly. To recap, I had good service, pretty good food, and found it all at a gas station. I can say this was a win and for picky friendliness, I will give them a surprising 3.4 out of 5.
To be fair on this review, I walked in at about twenty minutes until they closed. My friend asked if we could dine and, to my surprise, they seemed genuinely happy to have us. This restaurant, whatever the name really is, was very clean and not what you would expect in your typical Mexican restaurant. The chips and salsa spiced up my life for a short time while waiting on my food. The menu was pretty standard for this type of restaurant.
I ordered my favorite Mexican dish: Three cheese enchiladas. The waiter said, "They come with red sauce." I am not sure why all Mexican restaurants feel the need to tell me this. I would be disappointed if they bring me cheese in a shell. Then they would be called "cheese in a shell." At any rate, I ordered them and so this is what I received. At one point during the meal, my friend was requesting a refill on his drink in Spanish, as he often does. The waiter looks at me and I tell him I have Sprite. In the most Tennessee accent I had ever heard he says "I'll be right back with your Sprite!" I looked at him and he looked at me. Silence for two seconds until he was able to squeak out the word "Amigo."
Despite catching one waiter in his best American accent, I had a good time and had reasonably good food. The sauce was light. The cheese was good portion. Let me remind you this was closing time. What can I say but "Ole." For picky friendliness and a willing to have me passed closing time, I give this little Mexican hot spot a 3.9 out of 5.
TAcos A la carte
My first impression of this restaurant was not the best. The building itself looks dated and it seems they were trying to update the building during business hours. I have heard of "if you build it, they will come," but what if they are already here? Despite all that I entered into the building, hoping to be greeted and seated. To my surprise I found a sign that instructed me to seat myself. I did so and was greeted immediately by a friendly and eager waitress. She took my drink order and came right back for my food order. I was pleased to hear that she didn't speak English that well, but her native language was, probably Spanish. Keep in mind that I am not a linguist. I felt it added some authenticity to the experience. I know picky nation.... I know. You would think that the language barrier would keep you from getting food just how you want it. You are probably correct. I always assume at Mexican restaurants, you are better off to order something just how it comes. I played it safe with the tacos a la carte. They come with beef, lettuce, and cheese. This is one of my favorite dishes at any Mexican restaurant. The best thing about this particular dish is that it was onion free. I did not find one onion in the beef. The cheese was abundant as well. The lettuce was light which, for this dish, is just right. I can tell you this restaurant experience was one of the best experiences I have had at a Mexican restaurant. The service was great and the food was excellent. For picky friendliness, I give this dish a 4 out of 5.
